The Many Faces of Maquiamelo, an exhibition of mixed media works and sculptures by Colombian artist Maquiamelo, will open with an artist reception from 5 to 7 p.m. on May 2 at Rosenbaum Contemporary's Boca Raton, Fla., gallery (150 Yamato Road.) Those interested in attending can RSVP to rsvp@rosenbaumcontemporary.com or (561) 994-9180 x201.
The works featured in The Many Faces of Maquiamelo are from a series the artist conceived during the pandemic as social distancing and masking forced greater attention on the expressive power of the eyes (the windows to the soul) while mouths were hidden behind protective coverings. His works are also influenced by popular culture such as comics, manga and the bright, candy colors of technology, part of the new genre called technopop. Maquiamelo’s aim with this series is to bring “a message of optimism and hope in post-pandemic times.” His work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at the Museo de Arte Moderno de Cartagena and the Museo de Arte Contemporaneo de Bogotá in Colombia; Museo de Las Americas in San Juan, Puerto Rico; Centro Cultural Estación Mapocho in Santiago, Chile; and Pinacoteca Albertina in Turin, Italy, as well as publications including The Extreme Art of Maquiamelo published by Penguin Random House and Maquiamelo published by the Albertina Press. His work has also been included in important art fairs such at ARTBO in Colombia, ZONAMACO in Mexico, and the LA Art Show, Art New York and Art Miami in the U.S.
The Many Faces of Maquiamelo will remain on view through June 1 where it can be seen during regular gallery hours, Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., as well as on the website www.rosenbaumcontemporary.com.
